Things to do in Oslo
You certainly won’t be bored in Oslo, from exciting nightlife and busy bars, to the bustling harbour bordering Oslofjord, there’s always something happening.
Those seeking culture can try the Vigeland Sculpure park, with over two hundred sculptures, or one of Oslo’s many museums, from the national museum with Viking Swords and helmet to the very popular Viking Boat Museum on the Bygdøy peninsular (catch a boat and cross the scenic Oslo fjord). Don’t forget the Royal Palace, perhaps after visiting Oslo’s main shopping street, Karl Johan’s Gate.

After sight-seeing, or just on the away, re-charge yourself at one of Oslo’s many Coffee shops. You’ll find a huge range of coffees and teas on offer, including vegetarian and vegan options and a vast range of pastries, muffins and cakes. Top Tip – remember to take your plastic when eating or shopping in Oslo – paying by debit or credit card is the norm and though cash is of course accepted it can cause confusion amongst younger Norwegians!
Eating Out in Oslo
You’ll be spoilt for choice dining out in Oslo, with everything from Pizza and Gourmet Burger bars, international fast food chains to expensive restaurants – especially some of those alongside the harbour. Alcoholic drinks can be expensive, so don’t be afraid to ask for water with your meal – you won’t be alone! If you’re on a tight budget a Norwegian favourite is hot dogs, in every flavour, variety and topping, available from numerous supermarkets and shops, which also serve sandwiches, fruit and drinks.
Travel from Oslo – getting from the airport
There is an excellent public transport network system in Norway and Oslo. After arrival at Oslo Gardermoen, the trains leave directly from the airport, the express train takes about twenty minutes to the city centre Oslo Central or sentralstasjon, abbreviated as Oslo S, and local trains, which are cheaper make more stops though don’t take much longer. Travel about the city is simple, if you book a city centre hotel many of the main attractions are withing walking distance, though public transport, by bus, tram, or ferry is excellent. You might consider buying the Oslo pass which allows free public transport and access to most museums and attractions and is available to purchase as an app before you travel (though doesn’t cover travel to and from the airport). If you’re feeling brave hire one of the many e-scooters you’ll see Norwegians whizzing about on.
